After 7 years behind the lens, I’ve finally figured out what I like most…
Motion and Energy!
At first, I gravitated to birds in flight, especially slow shutter speed panning to capture a bird’s sharp face along with fluttering wings to convey a sense of motion.
Panning isn’t only for the birds! I also enjoy this with race cars, airplanes, and big lumbering freight trains.
Most recently I’ve been very excited to experiment with intentional camera movement. This can be done in a single image, and two or more images that are then combined in-camera using the camera’s Multiple Exposure feature (alternatively, multiple images may be combined in post processing software, like Photoshop). This technique allows even stationary objects to appear animated and energetic, as if the vibrational nature of the atomic structure has been revealed! It’s a cool, sometimes abstract effect that I love and look forward to exploring further.
