Jurying Artwork for OCFA Galleries,
Outdoor shows, and Community Exhibit Locations

OCFA ribbon OCFA has something to offer both the emerging and the established artist. OCFA provides the emerging artist a place to gain experience in being juried, of exhibiting and selling artwork. OCFA offers the established artist three distinctively different fine arts galleries AvantGarden, Showcase, and Bear Street and many other proven local venues offsite through the year for displaying artwork and selling to the public.

An OCFA member’s work does not have to be juried to be exhibited at monthly meetings, open shows, and membership shows. However, member’s work must be juried in order to be placed in an OCFA gallery, member exhibit locations, or outdoor shows. Work shown at these venues is for sale to the public and a certain standard is held.

Each OCFA Gallery and event location has specific guidelines for accepting work. The directors of each of the galleries arrange for work to be juried at a specific time. Contact each director of Avantgarden Gallery, Bear Street Gallery, and Showcase Gallery at the phone numbers listed in the “Locations” section above. They will give you information and assist you.

Jurying at Showcase Gallery is done by the Gallery Committee according to a set schedule. The procedure is described below.

OCFA membership and participation is required to show at any of the OCFA locations.

Jurying Procedure at Showcase Gallery

  • Jurying is done the third week of each month, except December, by a Gallery Committee with expertise in a wide range of media.

  • Bring 4 to 6 pieces of your ready-to-hang or display work; if you work in several styles, bring 4 to 6 pieces in each style for consideration in all galleries.

  • Call the gallery to find out delivery deadlines. Deliver work Wednesday through Sunday 12:00 noon to 5 p.m. (Sunday until 3 p.m.) to: Showcase Gallery in South Coast Plaza Village.

  • Include your name, address, phone number and biographical information if available.

  • Following jurying, you will be notified of the Committee's decision and be given information about showing at that location.

Work which is declined is not a personal reflection
on the submitting artist but is based on sales history at that venue.

Selected Guidelines for Jurying Work

  • Presentation: Quality and condition of mat and frame must be compatible with art and not detract. If work is frameless, the lack of a frame must add to the integrity of the piece and be acceptable to the Gallery Committee.

  • Originality: All work must be original. Copies of other artist's work and printed materials of class work are not accepted. Focus will be on imagination and creativity in the development of original ideas, themes, and handling of subject matter.

  • Technique: Proficiency and skill in use of medium being used.

  • Composition: Strong effective use of line, form, color, value, center of interest, etc.

  • Drawing skills: Good, general ability with understanding of proportion, perspective within context of artistic style used.

  • Three dimensional work: Workmanship and skill in using chosen material; surface finish and beauty of form; imagination in use of color if applicable. No mass produced or assembly line piece accepted.

Each OCFA Gallery and event location will have
specific guidelines for space, presentation, etc.
